PortBox is RS-232/485 serial to Ethernet IP converter, also known as a “terminal server” or a “device server”. HW VSP for Windows is included for free.
The PortBox converts a RS-232 or RS-485 serial port to Ethernet (IP) ovet TCP or UDP.
The serial port can be redirected over an IP network to Windows as a VSP (Virtual Serial Port). This makes it easy to connect, for example, a remote serial printer – it appears connected to e.g. COM17. HW VSP utility is included for free. It is a multiport Windows NT service based application.
The PortBox is a device server with a fully configurable serial port (baudrate, data bits, parity, stop bits) with support for 9-bit communication.
In a typical application, PortBox is used to connect a remote RS-232 device to a virtual serial port (e.g. COM17) on a PC. One PC can be connected to a maximum of 64 remote serial ports.
Other applications include extending a RS-232 line over an IP network (two PortBox units connected against each other). For example, a serial printer in one building can be connected to a surveillance control panel in another building.
- Ethernet: RJ45 (10BASE-T)
- Configuration: Telnet
- Interface: 1 serial RS-232/485 port
- Box-2-Box mode: Two PortBox units can be connected against each other over the network
- M2M protocols: Telnet, TCP Server, TCP Client/Server
- Special functions: Support for 9-bit protocols on RS-232/485
- Support for programmers: HWg SDK
- HW VSP software: Virtual serial port for Windows (NT service). Supports up to 64 remote serial ports.
- Advantages: Native support in the “HW VSP” application – the world's most popular virtual serial port for Windows.
