I/O Controller ER88a is an industrial converter that connects a serial port (RS-232/485), 8 DI (dry contact inputs) and 8 DO (Digital Outputs) to an Ethernet network.

The serial port can be redirected over an IP network to Windows as a VSP (Virtual Serial Port). This makes it easy to connect, for example, a remote serial printer – it appears connected to e.g. COM17. HW VSP utility is included for free.

A typical application is connecting a switch over a LAN to a remote relay output. A button in Prague can control a light in Amsterdam (DI Ethernet DO). The latency (transmission delay) is about 200 ms. Two I/O Controller ER88a units can connect 8 digital inputs to 8 outputs, and also connect the RS-232 serial ports.

Other applications include connecting a RS-232 serial display over IP, accessing dry contact inputs (door contacts, buttons) or controlling a remote relay output for resetting a printer or activating alarm.
